In Indonesia, rice politics from new order created liabilities for rice and ignoring local food such as sorghum, sago, tubers, etc.

KEHATI has initiated a local food corridor program with mainstreaming sorghum in Flores, East Nusa. Sorghum was chosen because it can live well in marginal land, high nutrition, and has strong cultural values with local people. During this time, Flores is known as a place with high poverty rate which one of them was caused by the dry and rocky land.

The local food corridor program in Flores is also an adaption act for climate change which many plants, including rice, are vulnerable because of the rising temperature. Sorghum itself is a plant that can withstand climate change. KEHATI with sorghum farmer women’s group developed local food corridor program to more districts in Flores with 3 vocal areas, which are Likotuden in the east, Ende in central Flores, and Lembor in the west.
